Pipes Cutting & Grinding Service

Laser, plasma and saw cutting, cut-to-length, end bevelling, weld preparation, deburring and surface grinding — the preparation that decides how the weld behaves later.

What This Service Is

The Weld Is Only as Good as the Preparation

A root gap that varies around the joint, a bevel angle that drifts, a land that is too thick on one side — none of it is visible once the cap is on, but all of it shows up on the radiograph. Getting the preparation right is cheaper than cutting a bad weld out.

We cut, bevel and grind pipe, plate, section and bar in our own works, on our own machines. Because the cutting and the fabrication sit in the same building, a mis-cut is caught at the bench rather than three weeks later at site.

  • Cutting: Laser, plasma, band saw, abrasive and pipe cold cutting.
  • Bevelling: V, U, J, compound and counter-bore preparations.
  • Finishing: Deburring, surface grinding, polishing and edge dressing.

Scope

Cutting & Grinding Operations

Six operations, offered individually or as one prepared package delivered ready to weld.

Laser Cutting

Clean, narrow-kerf profiling of sheet and plate with minimal heat-affected zone — the right choice for gaskets, plates, brackets and intricate profiles.

Plasma & Gas Cutting

Fast cutting of thicker carbon steel plate and pipe, including profiled branch and saddle cuts that would otherwise be marked out by hand.

Cut to Length

Band saw and abrasive cutting of pipe, bar and section to your cutting list, with square ends and every piece marked before it leaves the saw.

End Bevelling

Machine bevelling to ASME B16.25 or your WPS — 30° or 37.5° V, compound, U and J preparations with a controlled root face.

Deburring & Counter-Boring

Internal and external deburring, and counter-boring where a bore mismatch would otherwise leave a step inside the completed joint.

Grinding & Polishing

Surface grinding, weld dressing and polishing to the required finish, including satin and mirror finishes on stainless steel.

Tighter tolerances are achievable on machined preparations — tell us the requirement and we will confirm it against the drawing.

Weld Preparation

Bevel Types We Machine

Chosen by wall thickness, welding process and access to the joint.

Preparation Angle Root Face Suited To
Single V30° / 37.5°1.6 mm ± 0.8Wall up to 22 mm, general butt welds
Compound Bevel10° then 37.5°1.6 mmWall above 22 mm, reduces weld volume
U Preparation10°–20° with radius1.5 mm–3 mmHeavy wall, minimises filler and distortion
J Preparation10°–20° single side1.5 mm–3 mmNozzle and set-on branch welds
Counter-Bore——Matching bores of different wall thickness
Square Cut90°Full wallSocket weld, thin wall, slip-on flange ends

Preparations are machined to ASME B16.25 unless your welding procedure specification calls for something different.

Questions

Common Questions

Yes — job work on customer material is a routine part of this service. Material is logged in with its heat number and mark, and the identity is transferred to every cut piece before it is separated.

A spreadsheet with size, grade, length and quantity is enough for straight cutting. For profiles and plate work, send a DXF or DWG and we will nest it; for bevels, send the WPS or state the angle, land and bore requirement.

Yes. Stainless is cut, ground and handled with dedicated tooling and consumables. Grinding a stainless spool with a wheel that has been used on carbon steel embeds free iron in the surface, which will rust in service no matter how good the base material is.

That is the usual route. Cutting and bevelling feed straight into our fabrication service, so you can order a finished spool or structure rather than managing the prepared pieces yourself.
